Types of Train Aptitude Questions
Two types of train Aptitude questions in which trains traveling direction are used. There can be two possible scenarios in train traveling direction:
- Trains Traveling in the Same Direction
- Trains Traveling in Opposite Direction
Trains Travelling in the Same Direction
Let’s say Train 1 as T1 of length L1 and traveling at speed of S1. Train 2 as T2 of length L2 and traveling at speed of S2. If both the trains are traveling in the same direction. Then at what time train will cross each other. Can be calculated from the below formula:
Time Taken = (L1 + L2) / (S1 – S2)
Trains Travelling in Opposite Direction
Let’s say Train 1 as T1 of length L1 and traveling at speed of S1. Train 2 as T2 of length L2 and traveling at speed of S2. If both the trains are traveling in the opposite direction. Then at what time train will cross each other. Can be calculated from the below formula:
Time Taken = (L1 + L2) / (S1 + S2)
Solved Examples on Train Aptitude Questions
Below are a few solved examples on Train Aptitude Questions:
Example 1: Two trains whose length is 300m and 200m and their respective speed is 36 kmph and 24 kmph. Both trains are traveling in opposite directions to each other. Find how much time both trains will cross each other?
Solution 1: Given the length of Train 1 is 300m and the Speed is 36 kmph.
Length of Train 2 is 200m and Speed is 24 kmph.
Total Lenght = 300 + 200 = 500 m or 1/2 KMs.
Now applying this values in formula as below:
=> Time taken = 1/2 ( 1 / (36 + 24))
=> Time taken = 1/2 ( 1 / (60))
=> Time taken = 1/120
=> Time taken = 60 / 120 = 30 Seconds
Example 2: Two trains whose length is 300m and 200m and their respective speed is 36 kmph and 24 kmph. Both trains are traveling in the same direction to each other. Find how much time both trains will cross each other?
Solution 2: Given the length of Train 1 is 300m and the Speed is 36 kmph.
The length of Train 2 is 200m and the Speed is 24 kmph.
Total Lenght = 300 + 200 = 500 m or 1/2 KMs.
Now applying this values in formula as below:
=> Time taken = 1/2 ( 1 / (36 – 24))
=> Time taken = 1/2 ( 1 / (12))
=> Time taken = 1/24
=> Time taken = 60 / 24 = 2 Minutes and 30 Seconds
